Black Hearts Matter (BHM) is more than a ‘health slogan’, it is a ‘call to action’ for Blacks to address the alarming rates of heart disease that affects us. Blacks disproportionately lead this nation in heart disease rates and deaths.
According to 2013 data from the American Heart Association 48% of Black women 20 and older have heart disease, while 44% of Black men 20 and older have heart disease. Black women have a 31% death rate from heart disease while Black men have a 34% death rate. A recent study revealed that before age 50 Blacks heart rate failure rate is 20 times higher than that of whites.
Black Hearts Matter is committed to providing Black communities with general information on Heart Disease, Heart-Smart lifestyles, and specifically providing Heart-Intelligence stress management services.
This site is dedicated to the memory of a very good friend of mine, a solid Black man 'Ahmad Abdur-Rahman' who unfortunately died from a heart attack. Brother Rahman a former Black Party member taught African-American and African studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn; he was an expert on Black Nationalist movements.
Rahman an intellectual warrior was always committed to supporting and helping the community, he organized a program called Cyberdad aimed at Black children in metro Detroit without fathers in their lives.
As we promote and advocate that 'Black Hearts Matter' we will keep Brother Rahman's spirit close to our hearts; he will be deeply missed, may he rest in peace!
